Did you know Microsoft Office skills are fourth in the top required skills in all industries? Most, if not all, professions require a certain degree of proficiency in the programs.
Some occupations need a higher level of knowledge. Candidates usually have to prove their skills during the interview process. Sometimes, the interviewer can take their word for it when they list “highly proficient in Microsoft Office” in their resume.
One way to prove your skills is through a Microsoft Office Specialist certification. It helps further your career, especially in industries requiring it the most. Learn more about how to get one below.
What Is a Microsoft Specialist Certification?
Microsoft has three Office certifications. Each course increases the proficiency of the user. Every level of mastery widens their knowledge at using the features of their chosen program:
- Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS)
- MOS Expert
- MOS Master
A Microsoft Office Specialist certification validates the user’s skills. It proves that they have demonstrated an advanced command over the features and functionalities of a single Office program.
And if you’re looking for specific training like IT, you can also earn a computer certification online.

Are There Requirements?
Other levels of Microsoft Office certifications require that you have the preceding certificate. Specialist exams, however, don’t have any prerequisites.
Choose a Program
What program proficiency do you want? Choose one or more of the Office apps:
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- Access
- Outlook
You don’t have to get a certification for all these. It depends on what skills are valuable in your industry. A Microsoft Excel certification, for example, will get you far in the accounting sector.
Once you’ve chosen one (or more), it’s time to study and train. You can prepare yourself or can enroll in Microsoft Office courses.
Many online workshops and third-party courses are available, too. There are even free study materials on YouTube or Google.
These classes help you prepare for real-life applications of the program. Microsoft Office courses also have practice tests so you can check your skills.
In general, Microsoft recommends around 150 hours of instructions and hands-on experience to become proficient in one program. Depending on your level of understanding, you can get one certification quickly.
Take Exams
You have to pass a series of exams to earn the certificate. The tests consist of project-based tasks with an allotted time and number of clicks. You only need a score of 70% to pass.
The Specialist exams are 50 minutes each.
